Keeping Your Pieces Brilliant
Fine jewellery is made to be worn and enjoyed — but a little mindfulness keeps it brilliant for generations. As a simple rule, your jewellery should be the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off.
Most pieces can be gently refreshed at home:
Avoid abrasive cloths, paper towels, and ultrasonic cleaners on delicate or treated pieces, as these can cause fine scratches or loosen settings.
Wipe with a soft cloth after wear to remove oils. Higher-karat gold is softer and more prone to fine scratches, so store each piece separately.
White gold is finished with a rhodium plating that may gently wear over years of wear; it can be re-plated to restore its bright finish. Platinum develops a soft patina many find desirable, and can be polished if you prefer a high shine.
Silver naturally tarnishes with exposure to air. A specialised silver-polishing cloth restores its lustre. Storing it in a sealed pouch slows tarnishing.
Store each piece individually to prevent harder stones from scratching softer metals and gems. A fabric-lined box with separate compartments, or individual soft pouches, is ideal.
Keep jewellery away from direct sunlight, humidity, and extreme temperatures, all of which can affect certain gemstones and finishes over time.
We recommend having your fine pieces professionally inspected periodically — particularly pieces worn daily, such as engagement rings. A specialist can check that settings remain secure, prongs are intact, and clasps are sound, preventing the loss of a precious stone.
